Privacy

The short version. You can play without telling us anything. If you give us your email address we send you the question pack and the occasional new quiz, and one click stops that forever. We do not sell your details to anyone, and we never will.
What we collect, and when
If you just play a round
- Your answers and your score. Which questions you were asked, what you chose, and how long you took.
- A random identifier for your browser, stored in a cookie. It lets us count rounds and keep the game working. It is not linked to your name, because at this point we do not have your name.
- A scrambled version of your IP address. We run it through a one-way function and store only the result, which we use to stop one person flooding the game. The original address is never written down.
If you ask for the question pack
- Your email address, and the round you had just played.
We use it to send you the pack, and after that the occasional new quiz or new pack. Every email carries an unsubscribe link that works in one click and needs no password. Once you use it we stop, permanently, and we keep a note that you asked us to stop so that we do not start again by accident.
If you become a member
- From Patreon: your name, your email address, and whether your membership is active. We do not see your card, and we never receive your payment details.
- The name you choose to appear on the members' board.
- Your photograph, if you upload one. A person looks at it before it appears anywhere. Until then only you can see it.
Who else sees any of it
Three companies, each doing one job:
- Mailgun sends our email. They receive your address so the message can reach you.
- Patreon handles membership and payment. If you are a member, they tell us your name, your email and whether your membership is active.
- Our web host stores the site and its database.
That is the whole list. We do not sell your details, we do not rent them, and we do not hand them to advertisers or data brokers.
How long we keep things
- Game rounds: kept, so the board and our own statistics work. They carry no name unless you are a member.
- Your email address: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it.
- Unsubscribes: we keep a record that you unsubscribed, for as long as we run the site. That record is what stops you being emailed again.
- Member details and photographs: while you are a member, and for a short period after, so that rejoining is not a fresh start.
Cookies
We use three small cookies of our own, and none of them are for advertising:
- One that identifies your browser to the game, so a round can be played.
- One security cookie that stops other websites submitting forms as you.
- One that keeps you signed in, if you are a member.
Google Analytics also sets cookies of its own, described below. There are no advertising cookies on this site, and we do not sell or share your information with advertisers.
Google Analytics
We use Google Analytics to count visits, so we can see which pages people actually use and which quiz channels are worth writing more questions for. It is the only third-party service that runs in your browser on this site.
In plain words: Google can see that somebody visited a page, from roughly which country, on what kind of device. We never send them your name, your email address, your answers or your score — and Analytics is switched off entirely on our staff pages, so no member's details are ever passed to it.
- Google sets its own cookies to tell one visit apart from the next.
- Google shortens visitors' IP addresses before storing them, so we cannot see yours.
- You can opt out for every site you visit with Google's official browser add-on, or by turning on "Do Not Track" or a tracker blocker. The game works perfectly well without it.
What you can ask us to do
Write to us and we will do any of these, free, without asking why:
- Tell you what we hold about you.
- Correct anything that is wrong.
- Delete your email address and your member details.
- Stop emailing you — though the link at the bottom of any email is faster.
If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Union, or in a US state with its own privacy law such as California, you have these rights in law as well. We answer the same way either way.
Children
This site is made for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect anything from them. If you believe a child has given us their details, tell us and we will remove them.
If something goes wrong
If we ever discover that personal information has been exposed, we will say so plainly and quickly, to the people affected and to any regulator we are required to tell.
Changes to this page
If we change what we collect or who we share it with, we will change this page and update the date at the top. We will not quietly start doing something this page says we do not do.
